Intern Diaries

Internships gives us a chance to explore and gain experience in a chosen industry. They also provide us with insights to decide if the chosen industry is the one which we can pursue as a career.  The experience gained during internships is extremely valuable and important.  However, a lot of people don't have much knowledge about what internships are actually like, until they go and participate in one.  That being said, we've had some of your members who participated as Interns this summer describe what it's like.  Welcome to Intern Diaries!

Preeti, a B. Tech 3rd year Chemical engineering student got an opportunity to work as an intern at ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) Ahmedabad. It is a public sector undertaking (PSU) of Government of India. ONGC is India's largest oil and gas exploration and production company.  She managed to get into the company through a source. It's her first week and this will continue for another five.  Accommodation has been provided by the company itself and she is working with another 40 students of the same caliber as her's. She got into the lab work in which she and her other mates will have to give their opinions and ideas on the research being done in the company.  The project has been under mentor and the students are assisting them.

She is really excited and is looking forward to correlating the information she learned in the college courses to real-life problems and truly understand the programs and tools that aid in the professional world. She believes that this is a perfect opportunity for her to gain knowledge and build a career path for herself in this wide domain.

Next up in this series is Gaurav Krishan Kainth (GKK) of IPE Branch. He has been under internship with Nivia Sports.

Correspondent: How did you come to know about this internship?

GKK: A message had come in the IPE internship Whatsapp group to send Resume for Internship under Nivia Sports. Before this, I had sent my resume to some plants of Coca-Cola and 1-2 other companies but couldn’t get selected because of low CGPA. Mujhe laga iss baar kuch different hoga.
But, history repeated itself again. College ke through yaha bhi selection nhi ho payi pehle🀣

C: Did you have a recommendation or you got this internship on your own?

GKK: Result dekh k kaafi shock huya main, because kafi PRs ko approach kiya thaa mene iske liye. But later I came to know Nivia's Owner is known to my father. So, he approached him. Later by a small interview, I was asked to join from 1st June as an intern.

C: Tell us more about Nivia.

GKK: It has 3 plants in Jalandhar. One makes Shoes and other footwear accessories like socks laces etc. From the cutting of the workpiece to the manufacturing of a complete shoe is done here. I am currently in this plant only. It is the smallest of all three but there is a large scope to learn and explore here.
Another plant manufactures Synthetic products of shoes and other-other sports items like- shoe soles, football bladders, Hand gloves etc. which are sent to a shoe or 3rd plant for final touch. (Correspondent: Ohohhoo!!). 3rd plant is the biggest plant among three. Here assembly and stitching (wherever necessary) of all sports items is done. Sports kits and jerseys are also made here. Apart from it this plant is responsible for sales of all products.

C: Stay and food?

GKK: As it is just 2 km away from my house, I am living in my house and obviously bahar se too khayuga nahi. So world's khana - "Ghar ka khana" is available for me. (which the correspondent isn’t able to say for himself).

C: 1st-week experience and project. Was it interesting?

GKK: As I wasn't recruited from campus so I didn't join there with my other friends. I joined from 1st whereas they joined from 5th.
First 3 days were dull as I had no college friend to accompany me and the project was still to be allotted. But in spite of it, it was necessary to go there. On first two days, I was just thinking- " yeh kahan fas gya main".
But still, I learned about the company's work environment and whole Product width, length and depth of it by which I passed my time there. I interacted with almost all departments' workers and their supervisors too. So I made a good bond with them. Vese waha 14-15 alag depts. hain . Sbki briefing leli thodi si.
Fir 5th evening ko project allot huya, jis pr 6th se kaam krna thaa. 6th ko sirf project hi shuru nhi huya, meri khushiyo ki chhabi bhi mil gyi... Mere 2 classmates mere saath mere plant mai aa gye😍😍. Bakio k muqable unn dono se jyada achhi bonding thi because unke saamne mai jitni bhi mimicry kr lu.. Wo bore nhi hone wale.. Baki jo Interns select huye the waha unke saath shayad essa naa ho pata.
The project is very interesting. I can see a great scope of improvement here. I am studying daily so that I can link solutions which I recommend with my theories too So that it would help me in college placement interviews. Overall I m happy with my intern now as workload is not much but the only thing that is a little challenging is- I have to do things almost alone. As my project isn't a group project.
But I love this challenge because challenges make you stronger, wiser and improve your decision-making abilities.

C: Thank you so much sir for your time.

GKK: I would also like to thank Media cell to show interest in knowing about my experience.😊

We all are living in the digital world, and this era has given us a platform to develop our skills in any stream effectively by providing ample opportunities. One of these is the work from home internship which has gained its prominence, especially in the recent times.

Next in the series of intern diaries is Parth, an Instrumentation and Control Engineering 3rd year BTech student undergoing work from home internship under the guidance of a professor of IIM. We have taken his interview so that it will act as a guide for the students who wish to pursue similar opportunities.

C: How did you get into this internship?

Parth: I contacted that professor personally. At first, he was at our college as an assistant professor then he got transferred to IIM as a professor. I did a few projects under him when he was in NITJ and he liked my work and considered me for the internship.

C: What are you working on?

Parth: I am working on a project where I will be developing an algorithm to detect fake comments on TripAdvisor. It's all in Python.

C: How are you doing your work?

Parth: Sir gives me daily tasks and I complete them.

C: Is work from home really helpful?

Parth: Work from home is a great option if you are preparing for other exams like GATE, CAT, GRE etc.
In his opinion, it's better to work under a professor than in a company because the professor is generally more into research and has very few people working under him so he can give more attention to each student. Also, the LOR is significantly more of value if the professor is of a reputed institute and holds a lot of patents and published research papers in reputed journals.

Next up in this series is Kratika Vashisth of Biotechnology Branch. She has been under internship with Dr. G.C. Gehlot who is currently the HOD of Animal Breeding and Molecular Genetics Department of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pilani and Examination Controller in DRDO.
C: How did you find out about this internship?
Kratika: I was searching for internships in Rajasthan and under any professor in Rajasthan. I found him in the area of molecular genetics. I studied his research papers and then mailed him.
C: How did you get this internship?
Kratika: I joined on my own basis. In September month, I had mailed my resume and cover letter to him in the area of molecular genetics. And in April month, he replied to that mail.
C: Stay and food?
Kratika: I stay here at my relatives’ house so I did not face any kind of problem with food. Ghar ka khana hi mil raha hai.
C: What about the atmosphere and facilities provided there?
Kratika: It is such a great laboratory with great equipment facilities. More than 20 Ph.D. students and almost 15+ intern students are working under him. In the first week, I was really very much excited for this and after seeing such an awesome laboratory; the level of excitement for working also increases. Very flexible working hours are there.
C: What about your project?
Kratika: I am currently working on the DNA isolation and polymorphism techniques, which is currently being large-scale scale industries and laboratories.
C: Thank you so much madam for your time.

Next up is Ritu Klair of Biotech. She has been under internship with PIMS (Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences)

C: How did you come to know about this internship?

Ritu: Actually PIMS is a medical college, so I thought it might have subjects to related to my stream. So, my friend and I went to enquire and found they have departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology there. Then, humne waha pe baat ki and they said ok and that a lot of students come here for this purpose, so we can join.

C: Tell us more about PIMS.

Ritu: PIMS stands for Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences. Here, we perform various tests like LFT, RFT, lipid, electrolytes and learn about them here on automatic and semi-automatic analyzers. And also do projects.

C: Stay and food?

Ritu: Since I am a local, so I travel there on an up-down basis. Stay and the food is not provided by them.

C: 1st-week experience and project. Was it interesting?

Ritu: First 2 days were boring because we were just watching what is happening. We were not allowed to touch anything But after that, a new lab technician taught us how it works and we did things with our own hands and it's quite interesting.
As of the project, it was the toughest part, because they didn’t suggest anything. They just said to find a correlation of the new parameter with their tests. And I had to study 25 research papers to find my project.

C: Define, "new".

Ritu: For example, blood sugar increases in case of diabetes. But such a project had no meaning since it was common and obvious. So, something new. Like, I am studying relation between enzymes in liver for diabetic patients and my friend is studying uric acid and type-2 diabetes relationship and we are finding good and positive results for it.

C: Thank you so much for your time.

With our seniors so talented and dedicated towards their goals here we have a opportunity to present you one more intern story of VIVEK VARMA in Computer Science and Engineering. He is working for the famous IT company WIPRO LIMITED in Bangalore.

He got this internship through campus recruitment. During the technical round of the interview he was mostly asked questions on his projects and interests.  Then in the HR round, he was asked questions about him and his interests and about his favorite subjects.

Initial adjustments were a bit difficult for him as in to find for a PG. Later, he got used to it and really got involved in his work with great enthusiasm as he found the project very interesting. He started to gain industrial experience and project-based learning.  Working on new technologies and learning about collaboration works during this intern is again a plus point.

Our final member is  Jashaninder Singh Rajput from Biotech. He has just completed internship under R&D Department of Nectar Life Sciences.
C: How did you come to know about this internship?
Jashaninder: Since the MHRD had issued an order of compulsory internships even for a 2nd year ( which were made non-compulsory later), I had been on lookout for internships in various fields of Biotech, Pharma, in various highly ranked colleges like IITs, IISER Mohali, and PAU among others. But being from 2nd year, having no contacts being from a normal middle-class family and zero research experience in my core field (though I had previously had been under internship in OYO Rooms and a few online internships as well), I didn’t get much of a positive response.
Then, one of my teachers at NITJ recommended me at Nectar Life Sciences and I finally got an internship.
C: Did you have a recommendation or you got this internship on your own?
J: As told before, one of my teachers recommended me and I am very much grateful to him for that. He guided me and other students very well through the whole process and is very supportive towards me and my abilities.
C: Tell us more about Nectar Life Sciences.
J: Nectar Life Sciences (NecLife) is a generic pharmaceutical company which specializes in cephalosporins (a type of antibiotic). It has 10 units all over India. Manufacturing takes place in Dera Bassi, Chandigarh while formulation takes place at Baddi.
C: Stay and food?
J: Though I have relatives in Panchkula which is at a short distance from Dera Bassi, I chose to stay in a PG to experience independence. It was a fairly good apartment with furniture and food provided at just Rs. 4000 a month. So, it was a steal. Food quality was better than our mess though getting fast food at any time was an issue when I deeply missed Harry Paaji.
C: 1st-week experience and project. Was it interesting?
J: First when we heard that NecLife located in Chandigarh district, I and my accompanying classmate were very much excited. That we will explore Chandigarh, enjoy and other stuff. But all our hopes went in the gutter when we found out it is in Dera Bassi, 1 hour from it. But it had its own rural charm and even I feel a bit ashamed to say but Dera Bassi is much more modern than NITJ in thinking and societal attitude towards young people and students.
As of my Project, it was divided into two parts, 1st was to theoretically improve the activity and stability of an immobilized enzyme which was in Chemical R&D while 2nd part was in Analytical R&D where we learned about and operated various instruments like HPLC first hand. All the people were supportive and lovely and guided me to future career paths and studies. Some of them even helped me greatly in my Project.
I will surely miss NecLife and its people.
C: Thank you so much, sir, for your time.
J: It was my pleasure.
